In a razor-thin contest, Decision Desk HQ has projected a win for Republican Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, marking a critical hold for the GOP. As of 10:10 AM EDT, Miller-Meeks is projected to have secured 50.1% of the vote, narrowly surpassing Democratic challenger Christina Bohannan, who received 49.9%. This victory strengthens the GOP’s prospects for reclaiming a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives.

With Miller-Meeks’ victory, Republicans move closer to reclaiming a majority in the U.S. House of Representatives. In this tightly contested race, Miller-Meeks edged out Bohannan by a slim margin of 206,669 votes to Bohannan’s 205,874—a difference underscoring the competitive nature of this pivotal seat.

Sixty-nine-year-old Dr. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, who has represented her Iowa district since her narrow 2020 victory, has retained her seat in one of the most critical races for Republicans aiming to secure House control. Known for her healthcare reform stance, Miller-Meeks holds a district that often swings between parties, making her win pivotal for the GOP.

Her challenger, Christina Bohannan, a 53-year-old law professor with a progressive platform focusing on abortion rights, healthcare access, and working-class economic policies, posed a strong challenge. With a background in law and a commitment to social issues, Bohannan made this race one of Iowa’s most competitive.

Miller-Meeks has had a long electoral journey, initially losing multiple races against Democrat Dave Loebsack for Iowa’s 2nd congressional district. She narrowly won the seat in 2020 by only six votes, a result that held despite Democratic challenges. Following redistricting, she won in Iowa’s 1st district in 2022 against Bohannan, marking their first face-off.

Throughout her congressional tenure, Miller-Meeks has held varied positions: she opposed the Affordable Care Act, voted against both the American Rescue Plan and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, but has taken a more centrist stance on other issues. Notably, she has supported legislation on immigration reform and backed the Respect for Marriage Act to protect same-sex marriage, showing a bipartisan approach on select social policies.

With Miller-Meeks’ victory, Republicans move closer to the 218-seat majority required for House control. Currently, Republicans hold a narrow advantage with 220 seats to Democrats’ 212, with several races yet to be decided. If the GOP secures a majority, their agenda under President-elect Donald Trump is expected to focus on tax cuts, immigration reform, and stricter border controls as the party takes unified control of the government. The results of remaining close races will ultimately determine which party holds the reins in the House.
