In an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), the GOP vice-presidential nominee, avoided giving a clear answer on whether former President Trump would veto a federal abortion ban if elected. Vance explained that he had “learned his lesson” from previously answering a similar question, noting that he hadn’t discussed the issue with Trump.
Vance referred to Trump’s stance during the debate, where Trump expressed opposition to a national abortion ban, calling it unrealistic. According to Vance, Trump believes abortion policy should be decided at the state level, as different states like Alabama and California would naturally have differing views. Vance also downplayed the possibility of such a ban reaching Trump’s desk, citing the slim chance of the Senate passing it.
When pressed about his comments from the previous week, where he suggested Trump would veto a federal abortion ban, Vance acknowledged that he had spoken without having consulted Trump on the matter. Trump himself seemed to distance from Vance’s earlier statements, saying, “I didn’t discuss it with JD,” but added that he respected Vance’s perspective.
Vance reiterated that Trump is clear in his opposition to a national ban, emphasizing that the issue was largely hypothetical, given the unlikely Senate support for such a bill.
