In a Sunday interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio), who is former President Trump’s running mate, addressed recent comments by far-right media activist Laura Loomer, who made a racist remark about Vice President Kamala Harris’s Indian heritage. Vance clarified that Loomer is “not affiliated with the Trump campaign” and distanced himself from her comments, which referenced curry and Harris in a derogatory manner.
Vance, whose wife is of Indian descent, stated that he only learned about Loomer’s comments that morning and emphasized that discussions should focus on policy rather than distractions like Loomer’s remarks. He added, “I make a mean chicken curry,” but reiterated that the focus should be on Harris’s policies, not her ethnicity or dietary preferences.
Vance also criticized the media’s attention on Loomer, arguing that Loomer is neither running for president nor relevant to the campaign. He urged the conversation to shift back to issues of national importance, particularly Harris’s policies, which he believes have negatively impacted the economy.
Trump previously acknowledged Loomer as a “longtime supporter” but did not endorse her controversial statements. He described her as a “free spirit” and a “strong person” with “strong opinions” but did not offer specifics on which of her comments he disagreed with. Loomer, known for promoting conspiracy theories and using racist rhetoric, has no official role in Trump’s campaign, though her proximity to Trump has sparked criticism, including from his own allies like Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.).
