Music has a unique ability to touch us deeply, influencing our emotions in ways beyond our daily awareness. It can make us laugh, cry, feel courageous, or reflective. A well-chosen piece of music can alleviate stress, soothe a troubled mind, and provide comfort.
Lindon Beckford, a patient transporter at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, exemplifies this power of music. Singing since childhood, Beckford has found that his voice offers more than just personal solace—it also brings comfort to his patients.
Beckford’s serenades began as a personal habit, but he was surprised to find that patients responded positively to his singing. “I was always singing at work and as a child, so it felt natural,” he explained. “I did it for my own comfort, but then I realized people were listening and benefiting from it.”
Over his 30-year career at the hospital, Beckford has used his singing to ease the anxiety and discomfort of patients. He tailors his songs based on their needs and often receives appreciative feedback, with patients saying his singing makes their journey to procedures much more manageable.
One memorable experience was when a patient began harmonizing with him on the way to the cath lab, which left Beckford deeply moved.
Beckford’s dedication to his patients is clear. His singing provides a comforting presence during their times of uncertainty, helping to reassure them and make their experience more bearable.
