Mary Saban Pasko, the mother of former Alabama Crimson Tide head football coach Nick Saban, has passed away at the age of 92. Her death was confirmed by an obituary in the Tuscaloosa News and a tribute posted by her daughter, Kristen, on Instagram, featuring the song “Heaven by Noon” by Megan Moroney.
Born in July 1932 in Michigan, Mary spent most of her life in Farmington, West Virginia, where she met and married Nick Saban Sr. Together, they owned Saban Gulf Service Station, a significant part of their family’s story. Mary supported local Pop Warner football teams, worked concessions, and decorated the team bus. She was a dedicated fan from the early days through high school and college.
After Nick Sr.’s death, Mary later remarried Bobby Pasko, a high school friend, with whom she enjoyed various activities before his passing. Mary spent her later years at Danberry Retirement Community in Birmingham.
She is survived by her children, Dene Thomson and Nick Saban, their partners Leroy Thompson and Terry Saban, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sisters Fran Popovich and Ginger Hill and her brother-in-law Sid Popovich.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Nick’s Kids Foundation.
